Chenille patches
Custom Chenille Patches with Classic Varsity Style
Chenille is created with a special machine that loops thick yarn through felt to form a dense, towel-like pile. Most chenille patches combine that pile with layers of colored felt and an embroidered outline that defines letters and shapes.
Chenille shines at larger sizes. Its texture is bold rather than detailed, so it is ideal for varsity letters, mascots, numbers and simple logos. Fine text and intricate details are usually added in flat embroidery on top of the chenille, which gives you the best of both techniques.
Schools and athletic programs use chenille for letter awards, achievement pins, mascots and graduation years. Fashion and lifestyle brands use oversized chenille patches on jackets, hoodies and tote bags for a retro, textured look that photographs well.
Layering felt and yarn
A typical chenille patch has one to three felt layers in contrasting colors, a chenille fill in the main shape, and embroidered details. Your proof will show exactly which areas use chenille, felt and embroidery so you can adjust the balance before production.
Why choose chenille patches
- Soft, eye-catching texture with authentic varsity character
- Bold presence at larger sizes, especially on jacket backs and fronts
- Combines with embroidery for fine details
- Layered felt colors for depth
Recommended applications
- Varsity letters and letterman jackets
- School mascots and sports team logos
- Streetwear and fashion collections
- Graduation and achievement awards
- Tote bags, hoodies and blankets
Materials
Wool-blend or acrylic chenille yarn looped through felt layers, with polyester embroidery thread for outlines and lettering details.
Size guidance
Chenille performs best at 4 inches and larger; varsity letters are commonly 6–8 inches tall. Below about 3 inches the pile texture starts to overwhelm detail, so we may recommend embroidery for smaller pieces.
Quantities & pricing
Minimum order is 10 patches per design, which makes chenille practical for a single team roster or graduating class as well as retail runs.
Artwork recommendations
Keep designs bold and simple, with thick shapes and minimal small text. Indicate which areas should be fuzzy chenille and which should be flat felt or embroidery — or ask us to recommend a layout.

FAQ
Chenille patch FAQs
What size should a chenille patch be?
Chenille looks best at 4 inches and above. Varsity letters are usually 6–8 inches tall, while mascot patches for jackets range from 5 to 10 inches.
Can chenille patches include small text?
Small text is added with flat embroidery on top of or around the chenille areas, which keeps it legible. Very small text should be avoided on the chenille itself.
How do I attach a chenille letter to a jacket?
Sewing is the traditional and most durable method, especially on wool letterman jackets. Iron-on backing is available for cotton and polyester garments.
