Iron-on patches

Custom Iron-On Patches for Easy Application

Iron-on patches have a layer of heat-activated adhesive on the back. Press them with a household iron or heat press and they bond to fabric in minutes — no sewing required. They are a convenient choice for school groups, events, retail packs and anyone decorating garments at home.

An iron-on backing is a thin layer of heat-seal adhesive applied to the back of an embroidered, woven, printed or chenille patch. When heated, the adhesive melts into the fabric fibers and bonds as it cools.

Iron-on works best on cotton, denim, canvas and polyester-cotton blends that can handle high heat. It is not recommended for nylon, leather, vinyl, waterproof fabrics or delicate synthetics that can melt or scorch.

How to apply an iron-on patch

  1. Set your iron to the cotton setting with no steam.
  2. Place the patch and cover it with a thin cloth.
  3. Press firmly for about 30–45 seconds without moving the iron.
  4. Turn the garment inside out and press the back for another 30 seconds.
  5. Let it cool completely before handling.

Making it permanent

Iron-on adhesive is strong, but repeated hot washing can loosen edges over time. For items that are washed often — like work shirts and kids' uniforms — we recommend stitching around the edge after ironing. Wash inside out in cool water for the longest life.

FAQ

Iron-on patch FAQs

Do iron-on patches come off in the wash?

Properly applied iron-on patches hold up well, but repeated hot washing can loosen the edges over time. For frequently washed items, stitch around the edge after ironing and wash inside out in cool water.

Can I iron a patch onto nylon or polyester jackets?

Iron-on is not recommended for nylon, leather, vinyl or waterproof fabrics because they can melt or prevent bonding. Choose sew-on or hook-and-loop backing instead.

Can PVC patches have iron-on backing?

No — heat can deform PVC. Iron-on backing is available for embroidered, woven, printed and chenille patches.
